After the Celebration of the Mass in the Basilica of St. Peter's for the Solemnity of Mary Mother of God and the 43rd World Day of Peace, Pope Benedict XVI appeared at the window of the Apostolic Palace to pray the Angelus with the pilgrims from around the world who had gathered in St. Peter's Square. Reminding them of the theme of his message for World Day of Peace, the Holy Father wished all that the year which has just begun will be a time when, with the help of the Lord, we can make the world a better place. He added:
"If we take care of the creatures around us, how much consideration we must have for people, for our brothers and sisters! What respect for human life! On the first day of the year, I would like to appeal to the consciences of those who belong to armed groups of any kind. To each and all I say: Stop, reflect, and abandon the path of violence! At the time, this step may seem impossible, but if you have the courage to take it, God will help you, and you will feel the return of the joy of peace to your hearts, which perhaps you have long since forgotten."
